CHALLENGE

In 2022, the Le Sueur Theatre Historic Preservation Corporation received a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant (“Legacy Grant”) to evaluate the Le Sueur Theatre’s eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Constructed in 1933 and designed in the Art Deco style, with the latest in interior decorations and fixtures, the Le Sueur Theatre was considered the finest theater in southern Minnesota and was a cornerstone of entertainment in Le Sueur for decades. However, before being acquired by the current owner, the building had suffered from many years of deterioration, and it was unclear if the property would be eligible for NRHP listing.

SUCCESS

New History researched the building’s history, and worked to identify the remaining historic features and finishes, leading the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to recommend the property as eligible for the NRHP for its important role in the recreational life of the Le Sueur community. New History’s work has positioned the property for potential NRHP listing and its associated benefits, including additional grant funding for condition assessments and renovation – ultimately making it possible to put this important community resource back into service.
