HOLLYWOOD THEATER
Minneapolis, MN / 2012 - 2021 / Project planning and management, historic tax credit certification, historical research, National Register nomination, grant funding, construction oversight, city zoning and preservation approvals
One-screen theaters can seem structurally iconic and rigid, making reuse seem infeasible.
The Stakes
The lights of the Hollywood Theater in Minneapolis had been dark since 1987, with the City of Minneapolis struggling to find workable reuse options for this building type. The lack of potential funding sources, community support, and compatible uses presented too many risks for private or public redevelopment.
The Outcomes
New History teamed up with a private developer and the City of Minneapolis to create viable solutions to the project’s obstacles, transforming risk into reward. By listing the building on the National Register of Historic Places, we unlocked Historic Tax Credits and grant funding. Coupled with phased renovation and strategic community engagement to foster public support, these efforts successfully allowed the marquee to light up the neighborhood once again. The Art Deco features—both inside and outside—were restored to create an elegant event space, harkening back to the Golden Age of the theater’s namesake.
After 30 years of vacancy, New History flipped the switch.
